The Greek Adventure - 1 - 8 September

The Mediterranean is renowned for its ancient history, its civilization, its light and its beauty. The Greek archipelago is its crowning jewel.

These islands crowd the northeast part of the Mediterranean. There are over 3000 of them and if rocky outcroppings are included the number reaches 9500, 140 of which are inhabited.

This Adventure is all about paddling between bare islands with snow-white villages clinging to the edges of towering cliffs overlooking the crystal blue sea. We explore enchanting turquoise coves, rock gardens and hidden caves; we trek to twelfth century Crusader castles, secluded chapels and monasteries dense with groves of olives and pine trees.

Our Greek trip is for those who want to relax by dining at specially selected village tavernas, taking a nap on white sand beaches, snorkeling, swimming, and even improving kayaking skills with our B.C.U. certified instructors.

In every expedition we choose a different group of islands to explore, usually paddling between 15 - 25 km per day and making sure we have time for hiking, swimming and relaxing on the beach. The expedition is for paddlers with previous sea kayaking experience who would like to further develop skills and enable them to paddle confidently in windy and rough sea conditions. At the end of the day, we might opt to spend the night at a local guest house in a traditional village, eating calamari and Greek salad in a local taverna, or decide to camp on a remote sandy beach, relaxing by the campfire, eating pasta and drinking ouzo and retsina ( in moderation, of course ! ).

Our classic Dodecanese Islands Trip

Dodecanese Islands, a group of mountainous islands in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Crete. The name is Greek for “12 islands,” but there are actually 14 major islands and 40 smaller ones. Total area of the group is 1,044 square miles (2,704 km2). The largest islands are Rhodes, Kos, and Karpathos. Originally Greek islands, the Dodecanese were held briefly by the Crusaders and then passed to the Turks in 1523. Italy took control in 1911-12 and in 1947 ceded the islands to Greece.

The islands we'll visit in our trip:

Kos Island - This is our kayak base and this is where we'll start and end our trip. We will visit the famous Asklepeion, the Venetian castle of the knights of St. John, the tree of Hippocrates and the hot springs.

Kalymnos Island – The island of the sponge divers and high mountains that became renowned for rock climbing.

Leros Island – A beautiful island with lush greenery and deep large bays. It is known for its imposing medieval castle of the Knights of Saint John possibly built on a Byzantine  fortress.

Telendos Island – This island was part of Kalymnos until an earthquake separated the two in the year 554 AD. A small romantic place with one village and no cars at all.
